QNTM Day Wrap — July 30, 2026
Model vs. Benchmark: QNTM's 50-name model portfolio returned +0.27% today, badly trailing SPY's +1.68%. A roughly 140bp lag on one session is a big divergence for this strategy.
What drove it: The market's overlay flagged RISK_OFF today (VIX 17.6, oil $83.62) amid "tariff_broad" and "war_escalation" macro flags — a fitting backdrop given renewed Middle East fighting came hours after President Trump threatened to escalate the war as it enters its sixth month . With conviction sitting at just 49.2 and only 2.5% of the 1,423-name universe scoring "high conviction," QNTM's rules kept the book defensively tilted. That positioning missed the session's real driver: a narrow, mega-cap-tech snapback. Microsoft surged nearly 12% after posting 43% growth in cloud revenues, the most since 2022, combined with capex forecasts that didn't outpace expectations , and Lam Research surged 14.1% after reporting record quarterly revenue and earnings . Meanwhile the Russell 2000 lost 1.61% even as large-cap tech ripped — exactly the kind of concentrated, mega-cap-led move a broad, rules-based 50-holding book tends to underparticipate in during a risk-off regime.
Market recap: US equities rebounded Thursday from sharp losses the prior day, with the S&P 500 and Dow gaining over 0.5% and the Nasdaq 100 up 1.5% , a bounce after Wednesday's Fed-hold selloff.
What's next: Apple and Amazon earnings, plus GDP/PCE data, will test whether the tech-led rebound has legs.
