QNTM Day Wrap — September 16, 2026

The QNTM model portfolio returned -0.6% today versus -0.43% for SPY, a modest underperformance in a session dominated by the Fed.

What drove it: QNTM's conviction score sits at just 48.0, with only 2.7% of the 1,422-name universe scoring "high conviction" — a thin, RISK_OFF signal that kept the 45-name model portfolio concentrated and more sensitive to today's whipsaw. The model's tilt away from rate-sensitive financials and tariff-exposed cyclicals proved costly as the Fed raised the overnight funds rate by a quarter percentage point to a target range of 3.75%-4%, the first hike since July 2023 . Financial-related shares led the Dow's decline after Chair Warsh's press conference turned hawkish, and the model's underweight there missed any late bounce while its energy and tariff-sensitive holdings lagged as oil gave back gains.

Market recap: Stocks whipsawed all day. The Dow fell roughly 1.5%, the S&P 500 dropped about 0.5%, and the Nasdaq shed 0.4%, with all three indices having been higher earlier before Warsh spoke . The Fed's dot plot signaled one more rate hike expected in 2026 , and Warsh said "this summer's inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved" . Oil (WTI ~$102) eased from recent highs but stayed elevated amid ongoing tariff and geopolitical strains.

What's next: Markets will parse Fed commentary for October hike odds and watch whether oil's pullback holds.
