QNTM Day Wrap — September 23, 2026
The QNTM model portfolio fell -1.22% today, underperforming SPY's -0.77% by roughly 45 basis points. With only 50 holdings and conviction depressed at 48.3 (just 2% of the 1,420-name universe scoring "high conviction"), the model's concentrated book amplified today's risk-off tape.
What drove it: The session's damage was broad-based but sharpest in areas a lean, rules-based book can't easily diversify away — the Russell 2000 fell 1.68% and the Nasdaq dropped 1.13% , with equities falling after a rally that put the S&P 500 near a record, with chipmakers sinking . A concentrated 50-name model with any semiconductor or small-cap tilt gets hit harder than a 500-name benchmark in that kind of selective unwind.
Macro backdrop: Stocks joined bonds lower as higher oil prices stoked inflation worries, bolstered by data showing a jump in US business activity at the fastest pace since 2021 . Fed Governor Michael Barr said further tightening is likely needed to bring inflation to target, and Treasury 10-year yields jumped to the highest since 2007 . Fed's Barkin also warned supply shocks "aren't proving short-lived," keeping more hikes on the table. On the geopolitical side, Iran's president addressed the UN after Trump again threatened Iran but noted lower-level talks, while Trump meets Xi tomorrow with trade a likely topic — consistent with today's tariff and de-escalation crosscurrents.
What's next: Markets head into the Trump-Xi trade summit and continued Fed commentary, with yields and oil the key swing factors.
